Standard Scale Vintage Trains
Standard gauge was an early model railway and toy train rail gauge, introduced in the United States in 1906 by Lionel. As it was a toy standard, rather than a scale modeling standard, the actual scale of standard gauge locomotives and rolling stock varied. It ran on three-rail track that was 2 1/8 inches (nearly 54 mm) apart. Standard gauge had its heyday in the mid-1920s only to virtually disappear during the Great Depression. Popular manufacturers, such as Lionel, Ives, American Flyer, and Dorfan discontinued their Standard gauge train lines by 1940. The gauge would later be revived in the 1950’s by the efforts of the small firm of McCoy Manufacturing who produced trains of original design well into the 1990s. In the 1970s, Williams began producing and marketing reproductions of Lionel trains from the 1920s and 1930s. Lionel then introduced its classics line in 1988, which was actually manufactured by MTH. Lionel now occasionally releases some standard gauge trains, but MTH has on on-going product line that they have manufactured under their own brand since 1994.

On occasion, Trainz gets in rare and valuable Standard Gauge Vintage trains from Lionel, American Flyer, and Ives! To browse our Standard Gauge Vintage items, please click a category link below.
