Atlas 40000012 N Scale D&H C420 Diesel #411

New to this run of our C420 model is the high short hood. All high hood models on this run represent phase 1 locomotives originally owned by the Long Island Rail Road (LI). Long Island purchased their first C420s in 1963. When the lease expired in 1976 these units were initially sent to storage on the Delaware & Hudson (D&H) and Morristown & Erie railroads. Some were leased by the D&H for a short time. Later they would be sold to various short lines and industrial railroads throughout North America, three of which are represented on this run.

Many locomotives being offered on this run are related, as the road names represent different “eras” in the life of a given unit. The first and most obvious are Lehigh Valley 404 and 408 which became Delaware & Hudson 404 and 408. More complex are the histories of two particular Long Island Rail Road units. LI 200 was sold to Virginia & Maryland (VAMD) where it kept this road number. I

Atlas 42108 N RS-3 SOU #2141/blk

Well over 1,300 RS-3 road-switcher locomotives were built by ALCO between 1950 and 1956. It can be considered one of the most successful four-axle diesel road-switchers ever produced by the builder. These 1,600hp locomotives were powered by an ALCO 244 V-12 engine which was complimented by rugged GE electrical components. The RS-3 was truly a versatile locomotive. It could be found in virtually every type of service from passenger and commuter runs to heavy-haul and local freight assignments. Original owners of the RS-3 tended to be in the eastern and central regions of the US (with heavier concentrations in the northeast and southeast).

During this same time-period, ALCO offered a six-axle road-switcher which was more commonly found in the west. The RSD-4/5 was externally very similar to the RS-3, having six-axle trucks as an obvious spotting feature. They produced the same 1,600hp as an RS-3, but offered increased tractive effort due to the use of a l

Atlas 45954 N Scale Chessie U23B #2314

Powered by a V12 FDL prime mover, the 2250 h.p. U23B was GE’s intermediate-sized four-axle road-switcher of the late 1960s through the mid 1970s. The U23B’s direct competitor during this period was the very successful EMD GP38. In 10 years of production from 1968 through 1977 a total of 481 units were produced, making this the second best seller of GE’s “Universal Series” locomotives. The first units were delivered to the Delaware & Hudson in August and September 1968. CSX predecessors Chesapeake & Ohio and Louisville & Nashville had a combined fleet of 120 units, giving CSX one of the larger active fleets in later years. Penn Central, Santa Fe and Missouri Pacific also purchased sizeable fleets of U23Bs. Primary spotting features include a stepped-out radiator section and two sets of three tall engine access doors near the center of the long hood. During production, the U23B was equipped with various truck side frames, including Blomberg trucks from EMD trade-in locomotives, AAR-style
